Here’s a good reason to adequately fund mental health:

When you do not address #mentalhealth conditions, you pay more for #healthcare.

This message has been made over and over again. We have to ask ourselves why this has not translated into policy that is more inclusive of mental health integration into such opportunities like the medical home.

We still pay more for healthcare then anyone else, but waving the cost flag in front of policy makers, payers and providers on “why address mental health” has not appeared to make the case we want for large scale adoption within healthcare. Despite numbers like this chart shows, we continue to separate out mental health in the majority of healthcare.

We should be looking at more innovators who recognize the importance and inseparability of mental health from primary care and healthcare at large. Maybe making the business case, collectively, through these innovators will help us move forward on comprehensive policy change that best integrates mental health.
