Louise Hawson, creator of the blog 52 suburbs is launching a book and exhibition of the same name today at the Museum of Sydney.

Hawson has lived in Sydney for more than 30 years, but one day realised that she had never visited many of its more than 600 suburbs. Beginning in September 2009, she set off to photograph one suburb a week for the 52 weeks. Since then the popular site has provided fans with the occasional sortie back into the ‘burbs, sneak peaks into the production of the book, and the occasional shoot from elsewhere.

Crowds in John Street, Cabramatta

My favourite suburb on Louise’s blog is the same one I live right next to: Cabramatta. Louise captures much of what makes postcode 2166 a special place to live. I also enjoyed reading a more recent post contrasting the nearby suburbs of Fairfield & Bonnyrigg.

Maybe Louise will get an opportunity to photograph Canley Heights some time?

I live in hope. 🙂

The exhibition runs until October 9.

You can order your copy of 52 suburbs from UNSW Press.
