Kevin John Humphries, MP,NSW Minister for Mental Health, Minister for Healthy Lifestyles and Minister for Western NSW. He took questions from concerned psychologists whose bulk billed clients will be unable to continue with treatment from November 1st until January 1st 2012. These clients are most at risk of harm and unfortunately the Federal Government has not yet implemented its replacement mental health programs. They said in the last budget that they were increasing funding to mental health, all they have done at this stage is take away funding. GPs are yet to be informed about what to do with these clients. When questioned about the lack of treatment that now exists for these patients, the minister suggested that this meeting should be occurring in Canberra and that he would lobby the Federal minister. I’m not too hopeful. Looking back it was indeed a visionary scheme that was originally implemented by the Federal Health Minister under the last Liberal Federal Government. It is unfortunate that this Federal Labor Government has cut back on Medicare funding of psychological services and has not been able to organise the replacement programs. Christmas is a very stressful time if you are unemployed, mentally unwell and live in unstable accommodation….I thought the Labor Government cared about the welfare of this section of the community.
